Minimalist Tideline drawings

"Coasting" (detail) - Ink, graphite and gouache drawing by David Smith

“Coasting” (detail)
Ink and graphite on gouache on handmade Bhutanese tsasho paper 580mm x 840mm

These pieces are work which I was about to begin at the time when I committed to “Black Squares, Black Lines & Black Magic” as the theme for my show at the Round Tower, Black Swan Arts, Frome (November 2015). I was delighted to find I still had a passion to move it forward when I made space for it recently. I would like to re-engage with my Tidelines project and have in mind some large, minimalist but perhaps more lyrical and expressive pieces. These works  represent some first steps towards that aim, taking their inspiration from recent visits to coastal haunts, especially Charmouth and Covehithe, coupled with my love of maps and different ways of map making, mapping feelings and ideas as well as topography. Three small pieces in the “Always touching” series were selected for the Evolver Prize Exhibition 2016
